Events and activities in Lillianes
La Castagnata
On the last Sunday of October, Lillianes hosts Italy’s oldest chestnut festival.
It is the only festival that rewards raw chestnuts.
As every year, the first prize is the golden chestnut.
Lillianes celebrates autumn with this event.
An event that smells of wood and roasted chestnuts.
The chestnuts are slowly roasted in large iron pans directly over the fire.
In addition to a lunch based on chestnuts in almost every course, the event is enriched by folk music, craft markets, and activities for children, making the festival accessible to everyone.
The autumn landscape of the surrounding mountains provides a picturesque backdrop.
Nature and tradition come together to create a simple but authentic atmosphere.
La Ruotta
La Ruotta – street game, UNESCO intangible cultural heritage
On December 26, Boxing Day, La Ruotta returns to Lillianes, a popular street game closely linked to the Christmas period and handed down orally since the Second World War.
The game involves participants facing skill tests set by the players themselves, throwing a ball, usually made of wood.
Amid ritual calls in patois and penalties, the game continues to bring together the Lillianese community and tourists in a festive event deeply rooted in the Christmas tradition of the Aosta Valley.

Lo pan ner
In October, the regional event Lo pan ner, organized by BREL (Bureau régional ethnique et linguistique), takes place, involving the lighting of numerous wood-fired ovens scattered throughout the various municipalities of the Aosta Valley for the baking of black bread.
This is a highly nutritious bread linked to the traditions of the Aosta Valley.
The municipality of Lillianes has participated in the event since its first edition in 2015 and has remained faithful to it to this day.
The event is now in its tenth year as a cross-border event, expanding participation to the regions of Lombardy and Piedmont, and then also to Switzerland, France, and Slovenia.
Pan ner is a bread that uses mainly rye flour, which can be up to 70% or even 100% rye.
Lillianes participates in the event with the Piatta oven.
The Black Bread Committee has set itself the goal of creating a high-quality, niche bread, using mainly sourdough and adding chestnuts to the dough.
