The Aosta Valley: land of castles

The Aosta Valley is a veritable land of castles, towers, and ancient noble residences that tell centuries of history. From the most imposing fortresses, such as the Bard Fortress, to castles that seem to have come out of a fairy tale, each valley preserves unique evidence of lordships, traditions, and legends.

Staying at the Ou Crierel Hostel gives you the opportunity to explore some of the most fascinating castles in the region, combining cultural visits, spectacular views, and the discovery of villages and landscapes that make the Aosta Valley a special place in every season.

Fénis Castle

Fénis
Unlike other castles, built for military and protective purposes, Fénis Castle is not located on top of a promontory, but on a slight hill with no natural defenses.

Savoia Castle

Gressoney-Saint-Jean
Built at the behest of Queen Margherita of Savoy, who was staying in Gressoney, the castle stands at the foot of Colle della Ranzola, which dominates the entire valley from there.

Bard Fortess

Bard
The Bard Fortress is a fortified complex rebuilt in the 19th century by the House of Savoy on the rock overlooking the village of Bard, in the Aosta Valley.

Valleise Castle

Arnad

The Vallaise Castle was the most sumptuous residence of the family of the same name in the municipality of Arnad. It was renovated and officially reopened in 2017.

Issogne Castle

Issogne

Passed from the hands of the Bishops of Aosta to those of the Challant family, the castle is a rare example of medieval Alpine painting, with its cycle of frescoes depicting scenes from everyday life in the late Middle Ages.

Verrès Castle

Verrès
It stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the town of Verrès and the Val d’Ayas road. It stands tall and provides an excellent vantage point.

Graines Castle

Brusson
It stands on a high rocky promontory, from which it dominates the village of Brusson and much of the Val d’Ayas. It is a decidedly strategic position.

Baron Gamba Castle

Chatillon
The castle, with a sober style that imitates a nineteenth-century building, has a compact, almost cubic structure, with a massive, square central tower

Cly Castle

Saint-Dénis
It stands on a rocky spur at an altitude of 780 meters, in an easily defensible position from which it could dominate the village of Chambave and the valley floor from Aosta to Saint-Vincent.

Aymavilles Castle

Aymavilles
The castle of Aymavilles stands in the center of the village, on a morainic hill. The four cylindrical towers, characteristic of the building, were added to the pre-existing central body by Aimone di Challant.
